The Oculoplasty, Reconstructive and Orbit Surgery Department is dedicated to the treatment of congenital or acquired diseases and conditions affecting the eyelids, the ocular surface, the lachrymal system and the tissues surrounding the eye in the area known as the orbit. Oculoplastic surgeons are in close contact with other specialists in neighboring areas such as Neurology and Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology and Plastic surgery. The latter provides the basic knowledge and surgical techniques dating back thousands of years and also countless new techniques developed especially for this part of the face with is unique and privileged anatomical and physiological characteristics. Conventional wisdom has it that the “Eyes are the mirror of the soul” and there is no doubt that human communications is basically a face-to-face affair, but more directly an eye-to-eye interaction. That is why there is no need to be an expert in order to detect even the smallest defect of the eyelids that usually jumps out and may cause the person to become self-conscious in a way that may irritate as frustrations are reaffirmed every time somebody asks, “What is wrong with your eyelid?” The aesthetic appearance after surgery is very important, although the primary concern in all our decisions is the functional factor of protection for the eye. The wide range of surgical procedure offered in this specialty and the wonderful response of the orbital tissues to the careful and skilled hand of the surgeon, the use of the microscope, the surgical techniques and the microsurgical instruments make this area of Ophthalmology one of the remaining fields for surgery. It continues to be an art practiced with individual dexterity and a source of satisfaction because of the opportunity to restore and protect the patient’s visual health. |
