Escuela Superior de Oftalmología

The Higher School of Ophthalmology of the Barraquer Institute of America was created with the aim of expanding access to higher education, in particular to advanced training in ophthalmology for all Colombian and foreign students that fill the requirements for entering the School and can benefit from its programs.

The School accepts 4 residents every year for a three-year full-time program requiring exclusive dedication.

The School has a Board of Directors and an Academic Council. An alumnus of the School acts as monitor for the residents. The teachers are members of the Barraquer Clinic staff and the training modality is tutorial teaching in medical practice with monthly or bimonthly rotation with each specialist. The books of the American Academy of Ophthalmology are used as study guides.

During their three years of training, the residents practice with different levels of surgery at the School’s Experimental Surgery Department.

The School has a library with more than 4,000 volumes and more than 40 collections of journals on the subject of ophthalmology. The video library consists of more than 500 videos of ophthalmologic procedures.
There is also an auditorium with all the necessary audiovisual aids.

Surgical practice with patients is done under the supervision of the specialist tutor and the residents’ monitor.
